Golden Tigers fall to Stillman

James Eads and Elijah McMillan in double figures to Tuskegee

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. | Stillman College used a big run midway through the second half and Tuskegee University could not recover, falling to the Tigers 70-51 at Birthright Alumni Hall Saturday afternoon.
 
James Eads led Tuskegee (10-10, 6-7 SIAC) with 13 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 shooting from the free throw line. Elijah McMillan added 10 points and five rebounds, Camden Foster added seven points and seven rebounds in the loss.
 
Meanwhile, Rodnerius Lewis led Stillman (17-5, 11-1 SIAC) with a game-high 26 points, the lone player in double figures for the Tigers. Ronald Singleton grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Stillman.
 
The Golden Tigers jumped out early with Camden Foster and Elijah McMillan combining to score the first 10 points of the game for Tuskegee, giving the visitors a 10-7 lead. They would extend the lead, using a 9-2 run before the second media timeout to take a 19-9 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half.
 
The run was highlighted by a three-pointer from James Vinson and a lay-up from Kevin May. However, the biggest play of the run came from freshman James Eads who leapt over a Stillman defender with an emphatic dunk that quieted the crowd momentarily.
 
Stillman ended the run with a three-pointer, trimming the deficit to 19-12 before Eads knocked down a pair of free throws with 9:27 to play in the half and extended the lead to 21-12.
 
After leading 27-17 midway through the half, Tuskegee fell victim to an 8-1 run by Stillman that trimmed the lead to 28-25 with 3:10 to play that was highlighted by a Stanley Magee dunk that got the crowd back into the game.
 
After Stillman closed to within two at 28-26, McMillan knocked down a three with 2:15 to play to give the Golden Tigers breathing room at 31-26.  Vinson came down on the next possession with a three of his own with 1:31 to play in the half to give Tuskegee a 34-28 lead.
 
The two teams traded baskets for most of the second half until Stillman was able to put together a 17-1 run over a span of six minutes to take a 51-43 lead. The Tigers took their first lead of the game when Devin McNeal knocked down a three-pointer from the wing with 9:39 to play in the contest.
 
Tuskegee had their chances to end the run, but missed shots on four straight possessions, while Stillman was able to knock down a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 53-43 with 7:22 to play in the game. The run continued a minute later on a three-pointer that had Tuskegee facing their biggest deficit at 56-43, until Daniel Roach hit a deep three with under six minutes to play to trim the deficit to 56-46.
 
From there, the Golden Tigers couldn't recover as Stillman extended the lead to 18 with three minutes to play.
 
The Golden Tigers finished shooting 28.8 (17-of-59) percent shooting from the floor and 20.6 (7-of-34) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 52.6 (10-of-19) percent from the free throw line, while forcing 14 Stillman turnovers.
 
Stillman finished shooting 44.2 (23-of-52) percent from the floor and 31.6 (6-of-19) percent from beyond the arc, while shooting 69.2 (18-of-26) percent from the free throw line.
 
Tuskegee returns to action Monday night at home, facing Clark Atlanta University at Chappie James Arena with tip set for 7:30 pm.
