JACKSON, Tenn. | The Tuskegee University baseball team picked up a pair of conference wins Saturday, sweeping Lane College in a doubleheader at the Ballpark at Jackson.
Tuskegee (5-15, 3-2 SIAC) won the first game handily 14-1, then escaped with a hard-fought 6-5 victory in the nightcap.
Trey Nelson (2-2) picked up his second consecutive conference victory on the mound with a complete game effort in the opener. The sophomore went seven innings, allowing just one run off of three hits and striking out six. He produced nine groundball outs, and allowed just three runners to reach second base in the victory.
Tuskegee put the game away early scoring five runs in the first inning, and scoring 11 of their 14 runs in the first three innings.
Ricky Green and
Elgin Woodside led Tuskegee with a pair of hits in the opener, with Green scoring four runs.
Evan Kearse knocked in a career-high five runs in the win, and
Samuel Glickman walked three times, scored four runs and was credited with stolen bases.
As a team in the opener, Tuskegee walked 12 times and recorded eight stolen bases.
In the finale, Tuskegee built a 5-0 lead and added an insurance run in the seventh inning to pull the one-run victory. The Golden Tigers never trailed, but gave up two runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning before
Christopher Emerson came out of the bullpen to strike out the only batter he faced to pick up his first save.
Jordyn Thomas (1-0) worked six innings, allowing three runs (none earned) off of three hits. He walked four and struck out 7, while forcing eight groundball outs.
Jalen Luter led the attack offensively in game two, going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and a triple. Kearse went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while
Elgin Woodside had a run-scoring triple in the victory.
Christian Marshall ended the day 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI for the Golden Tigers.
The two teams finish up the series tomorrow afternoon on the campus of Lane College.
