JASPER, Ala. | The Tuskegee University softball team finished the SIAC Crossover as one of two teams without a loss this week. Tuskegee jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and then added three more runs in the fifth inning to pull away from Claflin (15-17, 8-3 SIAC) and pick up a 6-4 victory.
Â
Kayla Finch (3-6), who was named All-SIAC Crossover, picked up her second win of the weekend with a complete game four-hitter. She allowed four runs – three of which were earned – while recording five strikeouts and allowing one walk.
Â
Sharde Thomas and
Kenyah Smith each led the team with a pair of hits, with Thomas driving in a pair of runs in the victory. Tuskegee had six different players pick up a hit Saturday morning.
Â
With the two teams tied, Tuskegee scored a pair of runs in the third after Smith doubled down the leftfield line scoring
Cari Driver. They added another run on a bases loaded walk to
Jasmine Howard. They put the game away in the fifth after Smith scored on a while pitch, followed by a two-run single by Thomas to score Howard and
Jamaica Williams.
Â
Shaquailla German (6-4) suffered the loss with a complete game effort, allowing six runs (five earned) off of eight hits. She walked six and struck out nine in the loss.
Â
The Lady Golden Tigers return to action Wednesday afternoon against the University of West Georgia at home. The site of the game was originally set for Carrollton, but switched to Tuskegee after rain earlier in the season.
