Softball wins series against Stillman

Tuskegee wins final two games of series to clinch SIAC opener

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. | For the second time this season, the Tuskegee University softball team went into extra innings and for the first time walked off a winner, defeating Stillman 6-5 in 10 innings to clinch the conference opening series on the road.

After scoring five runs in the first inning, Tuskegee (2-18, 2-1 SIAC) battled Stillman late in the game, going three extra innings. After a scoreless eighth and ninth, Jamaica Williams was placed at second base to start the inning due to international tiebreaking procedures.

Williams advanced to third on a groundout by Kayla Finch, and scored on an RBI groundout by Karisa Foye. Stillman (4-10, 1-2 SIAC) went down in order in the bottom of the 10th to seal the second consecutive win for Tuskegee.

The Lady Golden Tigers jumped ahead in the first inning with five runs, with the scoring starting when Sharde Thomas singled and later scored on a Williams' triple. The junior third baseman scored when Finch reached on an infield single to push the lead to 2-0.

After Finch was out at third for the second out of the inning, Foye scored on a Chante Warner double down the leftfield line. Warner and Kenyah Smith scored on a Nadia Ponder single to left center for the final run of the first inning.

Warner led Tuskegee with three hits, finishing the day 3-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in, while Ponder finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.

Toni Beth Garner (1-5) came on in the second inning, picking up the win while working 8.1 innings and allowed one run off of seven hits.
