MONTGOMERY | Tuskegee University and Spring Hill College battled through the first three innings, before the Badgers used the long ball to pull away midway through the contest and claimed a 13-3 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) victory on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Tuskegee (9-24, 5-10 SIAC), in the midst of a battle to clinch a spot in the upcoming SIAC Baseball Championships, found itself tied at 2-all after three innings of play after using an RBI single by
Elgin Woodside in the second and sacrifice fly by
Gemini Jackson in the third to get on the board.
Â
However, Spring Hill (26-14, 16-2 SIAC) used a grand slam by Alex Jones – his 11th homerun of the season – off of Tuskegee reliever
Ricky Green (1-1) in the fourth inning to pull away from the Golden Tigers. Spring Hill added three more runs in the sixth and four in the seventh on the strength of two doubles for the final margin.
Â
Green suffered the loss in relief, working two innings and allowing seven runs off of five hits while striking out two.
Â
The Golden Tigers were held to four hits by Spring Hill starter Christian Bahlinger (6-2), who finished with a complete game effort with five strikeouts.
Â
Tuskegee travels to LeMoyne-Owen for a crucial mid-week SIAC series. The Golden Tigers and LeMoyne-Owen are currently tied for fourth in the SIAC West Division, and with a sweep the Golden Tigers could assure themselves a spot in the tournament.
