Tuskegee defeats Edward Waters in final game of calendar year

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The Golden Tigers (9-4, 4-2 SIAC) defeated Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foe Edward Waters, 84-74, on Saturday afternoon in the Daniel "Chappie" James Center to close out play for the calendar year.

After trailing 3-0 to start the game, Tuskegee gained a 10-3 at the first media timeout at the 15-minute mark. Deveraux Davis (Minneapolis, Minn.) checked in during the break and scored on the next two offensive possessions, however Edward Waters continued to respond on the other end, putting the game at 14-11 after a transition score with 13 minutes to play in the half.
 
Steve Dulley (Kansas City, Mo.) gave the Golden Tigers a 22-14 lead with a three-pointer with just under 11 minutes to play, yet only led 25-21 at the under eight media break after another run from Edward Waters.
 
The two teams remained tight throughout the remainder of the half that saw Tuskegee lead the game for 15 of the first 20 minutes of play and went into the locker room leading 40-35.
 
The Golden Tigers pushed their lead to eight heading into the first media timeout of the half and extended the lead to double digits at 47-37 after a layup from Devin Booker (Chicago, Ill.).
 
Minutes later, free throws from Reco Hallmon (Atlanta, Ga.) and a score inside from Kusamae Draper (Conyers, Ga.) put Tuskegee up 15 for the first time at 56-41. After a short response from Edward Waters, the Golden Tigers made a surge once more, going up 67-50 on a three from Gregg Boyd (Seat Pleasant, Md.) with seven minutes to play.
 
Edward Waters cut into the lead repeatedly over the remainder of the contest, however never got back within single digits, as Tuskegee led the game for 37 minutes in the win.

Tuskegee outscored Edward Waters points in the paint (24-22), points off turnovers (23-9), and fast breaks (15-12), while the teams tied in bench points (29-29).

Booker led the way with a game-high 19 points along with four rebounds and two assists, followed by Boyd with 14 points, including 4-for-8 from three-point range on the day. Meanwhile, Davis recorded his second straight double figure game with 13 points and six rebounds, followed by D'Anthony Pennington (Kansas City, Mo.) who added 12 points in the win.
