TUSKEGEE, Ala. – Tuskegee softball bounced back from a Saturday split to claim a 5-3 win over Spring Hill College on Sunday afternoon at the TU Softball Field, closing out a tightly contested conference series.
Â
With the win, the Golden Tigers improve to 17-4 overall and 12-1 in SIAC play, while Spring Hill drops to 14-12 overall and 10-2 in league action.
Â
Sunday's rubber match opened with Spring Hill getting on the board in the second inning.
Â
After a pair of singles, the Badgers capitalized on a scoring opportunity when Destiny Pierce drove in a run with a sharp single to left field, putting the visitors ahead 1-0.
Â
Tuskegee responded in a big way in the third, seizing momentum with a four-run frame.
Â
Alexis Thompson reached on a fielder's choice to bring home the tying run, then
Caroline Clark delivered the clutch hit of the inning with a two-run double into the gap to give the Golden Tigers a 3-1 lead.
Â
Carole Ross followed by grounding out to second, bringing in another run and stretching the lead to 4-1.
Â
Spring Hill chipped away in the fourth and fifth, scoring one run in each inning, including RBI singles from Amanda Glowacki and Rycca Hinton, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
Â
However, Tuskegee's defense tightened up from there, and starting pitcher
Monica Rose slammed the door the rest of the way.
Â
Rose was steady in the circle, going the distance to earn the complete-game victory.
Â
The right-hander scattered 10 hits while allowing just three runs (all unearned), striking out seven and walking two across seven innings of work.
Â
Offensively, Clark led the way for Tuskegee, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a double.
Â
Thompson, Ross, and
Victoria Harrison each added key contributions at the plate, while the Golden Tigers remained aggressive on the base paths and composed on defense, minimizing damage in crucial innings.
Â
Spring Hill's Hinton continued her strong weekend with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, while Pierce and Glowacki each recorded RBI singles.
Â
The Badgers outhit Tuskegee 10-5 but left runners stranded in key moments and were held in check late by Rose and the Golden Tigers' infield.
Â
With the weekend series win, Tuskegee remains at the top of the SIAC standings as they
prepare for another crucial stretch of conference play.
