Carter joins Tuskegee after most recently serving as the linebackers coach and video coordinator at Lane College for the past two seasons.
The 2024 season saw continued production from Lane’s linebackers, with the defense tallying 644 total tackles, 65 tackles for loss, and 23 sacks. Devon Irving emerged as the standout linebacker, recording 92 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks. Tyshun Gaiter remained a key contributor with 79 total tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss, while Robert Brown added 58 total tackles and a team-high 8.5 sacks. Lane’s defense forced eight fumbles, recovered seven, and intercepted six passes, highlighting their ability to create turnovers.
In 2023, Lane’s defense recorded 633 total tackles, with 68 tackles for loss and 20 sacks. All-SIAC linebacker Asmar Hasan led the team with 118 total tackles, including 14 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, proving to be a key leader on the defensive side. Gaiter followed closely with 67 total tackles. The unit contributed to to six total interceptions and seven forced fumbles, demonstrating strong playmaking ability.
Prior to Lane, he was the assistant defensive line coach at Texas Southern University, where his unit helped the Tigers rank second nationally in interceptions at the FCS level. While at TSU, Carter also established himself as one of Houston's top defensive line trainers, coaching two high school All-Americans and numerous Division I recruits.
Before his time at Texas Southern, Carter made a significant impact at the high school level in the state of Texas. As defensive coordinator and strength & conditioning coach at Franklin Senior High School, his defense led the Class 2A division in takeaways. Prior to that, he served as defensive coordinator at Pro-Vision Academy, where he helped guide the program to its first-ever state championship.
He went on to earn an athletic scholarship to Grambling State University, where he was a key member of the football program. During his playing career from 2005 to 2009, he helped lead the Tigers to a SWAC Championship and Black College National Championship in 2005. Carter later earned Defensive MVP honors in 2007 before capturing another SWAC Championship in 2008. He graduated from Grambling with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 2010 and later earned a master's degree in sports administration in 2011.
A native of Houston, Texas, Carter is a graduate of Evan E. Worthing High School, known as the “Pride of Sunnyside.”
