TUSKEGEE, Ala. | The Tuskegee University softball team erupted for a double-digit offensive output against LeMoyne-Owen College, finishing off the sweep of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series 16-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Tuskegee (16-27, 14-4 SIAC) erupted for eight runs in the second inning to pull away from LeMoyne-Owen after the two teams each put up a run in the first. The Lady Golden Tigers lone run in the first inning came in the form of a leadoff homerun by
Sharde Thomas – her first career homerun.
The Lady Golden Tigers used eight hits in the second inning to pull away for the win. The inning started with a one-out RBI single by
Haley Plato, continued with an RBI single by Thomas and a steal of home by
Roneshia Rudolph. The inning continued with a three-run double by
Kaylin Finch, an RBI double by
Kenyah Smith and RBI single by
Karisa Foye.
Tuskegee scored three more in the third and four more in the fourth for the final margin. The output was the second most scored this season by Tuskegee, matching the effort against Paine (16-0) and just two short of the effort against Clark Atlanta (18-0) – both games at the SIAC Crossover.
Smith led the Lady Golden Tigers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Thomas led a group four players with a pair of hits in the victory, scoring three runs and added two runs batted in. Warner finished 2-for-3 (run scored), Foye 2-for-2 (two runs scored and RBI) and Plato 2-for-2 (two runs scored and RBI).
Finch (8-9) won her fourth consecutive conference game, with a complete game effort. She allowed two runs (just one earned) on four hits, while striking out five in the win.
Tuskegee travels to Birmingham in a rare mid-week SIAC series against Miles College with the top seed in the West Division on the line. The winner of the series all but secures the top seed in the upcoming SIAC Softball Championships later this month.
