TUSCALOOSA, Ala. | A pair of streaks came to a close Saturday in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) battle between Tuskegee University and Stillman College as the two split the opening two games of the series.
Tuskegee (7-16, 5-3 SIAC) ended the seven-game winning streak of Stillman in the opener, riding the arm of
Trey Nelson for the 9-6 victory. Nelson (3-2) won his third consecutive game, all conference games, with a complete game effort allowing six runs while scattering 10 hits over the last five innings of play. The sophomore did not allow a base runner in the first, second or sixth innings.
The Golden Tigers took an early lead, putting four runs on the board in the first inning. The first four hitters of the game all reached base and later scored in the inning, with
Evan Kearse and
Gemini Jackson reaching with doubles.
Jalen Luter and
Ricky Green added back-to-back singles, while
Alexander Henderson made his return to the lineup and hit a double in his first at-bat back.
The lead grew to 7-1 in the fourth highlighted by three hits, a pair of singles (Kearse and
Ricky Green) and double by
Elgin Woodside. After Stillman trimmed led to three (7-4), Tuskegee added a pair of runs in the sixth as insurance to record the victory.
Ricky Green led Tuskegee in the opener, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Henderson and Kearse each picked up a pair of hits in the win. Jackson finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Stillman (11-21, 6-5) ended the four-game winning streak of Tuskegee with a 17-8 victory.
After Tuskegee scored the first run of the game in the second inning, Stillman scored 16 unanswered in the third (six runs) and fourth (10 runs) innings.
Joseph Mauldin (2-5) suffered the loss, going just three innings and allowing six runs off of six hits while striking out three. The bullpen struggled giving up 11 runs off of eight hits in the final three innings of the contest.
Although trailing big, the Golden Tigers mounted a comeback in the seventh inning, scoring six runs off five hits. They were able to get run scoring hits from Henderson (two RBI),
Matthew Reed (double), and Luter. They also got an RBI groundout off the bat of
Kenneth Johnson.
Reed led Tuskegee in the second game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Henderson finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI.
The two teams will meet in the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon at 1 pm in Tuscaloosa.
