TUSKEGEE, Ala. | After opening the season with 15 consecutive matches on the road, the Tuskegee University volleyball team will play their home opener Friday night against Stillman College. The match is slated to start at 6 pm inside Chappie James Arena.
Tuskegee (8-7, 6-5 SIAC) is currently fourth in the SIAC Western Division standings, the spot where the coaches originally picked the Tigerettes to finish in the preseason poll. They are sitting just one-half game behind Friday night's opponent Stillman (8-10, 6-4 SIAC).
The Tigerettes started the season strong under first-year head coach
Melissa Robinson, winning six of the first nine matches – including winning three of their four SIAC matches in the West Cluster held in Birmingham. Last weekend, they went 3-3 in the SIAC Crossover with their three losses coming against three of the top four teams in the Eastern Division. They were able to defeat Benedict (6-3, 5-1 SIAC) in the Crossover, handing them their only conference loss to date.
Thus far this season, the Tigerettes have been led by junior
Pamela Allen with 151 kills (3.00 kills/set) and a hitting percentage of .383. They have also gotten offensive production from freshman
Jamiah Breda-Nixon with 98 kills (2.18 kills/set), with a hitting percentage of .239; while
Jacqueline Wilson has added 69 kills and
Donovan Wingfield 56.
Sophomore
Morgan Scrivens leads Tuskegee with 350 total assists (7.45 assists/set), including a career-high 47 assists against Albany State at the SIAC Crossover. Freshman
Zahria Radford leads the Tigerettes defensively with 174 digs, while Scrivens has added 73 and Rachel Wood 64 through 15 matches.
As a team, Tuskegee is hitting .186 on the season with 430 total kills and 492 digs. They have also added 60 blocks, while holding their opponents to a .131 hitting percentage.
The two teams met three times, with Tuskegee winning the first two matches (3-1) before falling to Stillman in the SIAC Tournament in the season finale (3-2).
