TUSKEGEE, Ala. – Senior
James Slaughter delivered a stellar performance at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 as Tuskegee baseball secured a 12-4 victory over Kentucky State on Saturday.
Slaughter's consistent hitting helped fuel the Golden Tigers' offense, recording singles in the first, third, fifth, and sixth innings.
Tuskegee set the tone early, jumping on the scoreboard in the first inning when
Jacobi Brooks grounded out, driving in two runs to give the Golden Tigers an early lead.
In the third inning, Tuskegee added two more runs.
Ryan Morrow battled through an eight-pitch at-bat before delivering an RBI single down the right-field line to make it a 4-1 game.
Kentucky State responded in the fifth inning with a solo inside-the-park home run by Parker White, trimming the deficit.
However, Tuskegee's offense remained relentless, capping off the victory with a five-run eighth inning.
Morrow laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring in one run,
Terry Ware worked a bases-loaded walk,
Devon Lee delivered an RBI single, and
Alex Glass lifted a sacrifice fly to extend the lead.
Richard Powell IV earned the complete-game victory for Tuskegee, allowing 10 hits and four runs (two earned) over nine innings while striking out two and walking two.
Kentucky State's Andrew Smith took the loss, pitching seven innings and giving up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits, striking out two and walking four.
Tuskegee racked up 12 hits in the game. Morrow provided a key spark in the middle of the lineup, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Lee and
John Saffold also recorded multi-hit games.
Aggressive baserunning played a crucial role in Tuskegee's win, as the Golden Tigers stole an impressive 15 bases.
Slaughter, Brooks, and Saffold each swiped multiple bags, keeping Kentucky State's defense on its heels.
TU also displayed solid defensive play, turning a key double play to limit Kentucky State's scoring opportunities.
With the win, Tuskegee continues to build momentum in conference play, looking ahead to tomorrow's doubleheader to close the series starting at 12 noon.
