TUSKEGEE, Ala. — The Tuskegee baseball team is set to face a tough test on Tuesday, April 16, when it travels to Livingston, Alabama, to take on Gulf South Conference opponent West Alabama in a midweek non-conference battle at Tartt Field.
Â
First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT. The Golden Tigers enter the matchup with a 13–27 overall record, while the Tigers of West Alabama stand at 19–22 on the season.
Â
ABOUT TUSKEGEE (13-27, 9-18 SIAC)
Tuskegee is coming off a hard-fought weekend against SIAC foe Benedict, where the Golden Tigers took the final game of a three-game series to avoid the sweep.
Â
Offensively, Tuskegee continues to rely on the consistent production of sophomore standout
Ryan Morrow, who leads the team with a .362 average, 46 hits, and 35 RBIs. Morrow is also a major threat on the basepaths, going 20-for-24 in stolen base attempts.
Â
Devon Lee (.316 AVG, 33 RBIs, 3 HR) and
John Saffold (.317 AVG, 20 SB) round out a top of the order that has generated over 240 runs this season.
Â
In total, Tuskegee is batting .284 as a team and has stolen 165 bases in 200 attempts—ranking among the most aggressive and efficient base-stealing teams in the region.
Â
On the mound, Tuskegee has struggled with consistency, posting a team ERA of 8.77 while allowing 337 hits and 338 runs through 297.2 innings.
Â
Mikelle Mason leads the staff with five wins and 42 strikeouts, while
Richard Powell IVÂ and
Amare Morgan have logged the most innings.
Â
Control and defense remain key issues, as Tuskegee pitchers have combined for 299 walks and 75 hit batters, and the defense holds a team fielding percentage of .946 with 71 errors on the year.
Â
ABOUT WEST ALABAMA (19-22, 12-15 GSC)
West Alabama, meanwhile, poses a significant challenge as a balanced and experienced team from the competitive Gulf South Conference.
Â
The Tigers are 19–22 overall and 12–15 in conference play, but boast a roster stacked with power, speed, and pitching depth.
Â
At the plate, UWA is hitting .244 as a team but gets strong production from Nick Wilson (.319 AVG, 28 RBIs), Blake Vineyard (.317 AVG, 8 HR, .548 SLG), and Joe Watkins (.296 AVG, 11 doubles, .445 OBP).
UWA has hit 36 home runs as a team and tallied 194 RBIs, showing a tendency to strike quickly and capitalize on extra-base hits.
Â
The West Alabama pitching staff holds a team ERA of 4.82, led by Bryant Quimby (2.71 ERA, 5-5 record, 63 IP, 56 Ks) and reliever Judah Buckner, who has been lights-out with 21 strikeouts in 14 innings and a 0.00 ERA.
Â
The bullpen features depth, with eight different pitchers logging double-digit innings and multiple arms capable of closing games.
Â
Defensively, UWA is fielding at a .976 clip and has turned 29 double plays, while limiting opponents to a .267 batting average.
Â
Tuesday's matchup will test Tuskegee's ability to manufacture runs and execute defensively against one of the strongest non-conference opponents on its schedule.
Â
With the regular season winding down, the Golden Tigers will look to build momentum as they prepare to return to SIAC play in the coming days.
