James Marion Hill, best known as "Bartow" is a native of Bartow, Florida, enrolled at Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee University on a basketball scholarship in 1968.
A guard, Hill lettered four years and was a three-year starter. He was team MVP for the 1069-70 season, MVP of the Blue-Gray Tournament and named to the All-Blue-Gray Tournament first team. Hill led the Golden Tigers in scoring during the 1969-70 season and was the assists and steals leader for the 1969-70 and 1970-71 seasons. He was the second leading scorer on the 1970-71 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship teams, which was voted one of the best squads in school history.
Hill a math major, was also a stellar student. He won the team academic award for the 1969-70 season, and he was named Who's Who in College Athletics and Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1972 and set the Golden Tigers' single-game scoring record with 57 points Tuskegee vs. Florida A&M in 1973. He also earned a Master's Degree in Math Education from Tuskegee in 197 4 was awarded the baccalaureate degree in mathematics in 1973 and also earned a Master's Degree in Math Education in 1974 from Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University).
Hill began his professional career with IBM in 197 4 as a programmer. He rose to the position of Systems Engineer during his 15 year tenure with the organization. Hill's career path later took him into the classroom where he taught Math and Computer Programming at Columbia High School in Decatur, Georgia. Hill then launched his own business, Griggs & Hill, an information and technology consulting firm. He eventually returned to the corporate world as IT Project Manager for GTF-Verizon in Atlanta, Georgia. He is currently IT Project Manager with the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Hill is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He participated in the Partners in Education Program at Therell High School in Atlanta, Georgia for more than twelve years; he coached a youth basketball team for youth ages 6-8 and has worked with Hands on Programs in Atlanta, Georgia. Hill attends Ben Hill United Methodist Church.
Hill, the father of three daughters, resides in Atlanta, Georgia.
